What Size Barbell Collars Do You Need? Measure the Sleeve, Not the Grip
POWER GUIDANCE · PERFORMANCE TRAINING GEAR
Choose barbell collars by the diameter of the plate-loading sleeve, not the middle section you hold. A bar can have a narrower shaft and larger sleeves. Getting this distinction right is the first step toward choosing collars that match your equipment.

Find the part the collar actually touches
The shaft is the central section of the bar. The sleeves are the sections where you load weight plates. A collar belongs outside the plates on the sleeve, so a measurement taken at the grip does not answer the compatibility question.
Do not identify the sleeve size from the bar's length alone. A short training bar and a longer bar may use similar loading sleeves, while two bars that look alike may require different accessories.
Check compatibility in this order
- Find the bar model. Read its sleeve specification in the manufacturer's listing or manual.
- Confirm the measured location. If measuring, use the outside diameter of the unloaded loading sleeve.
- Compare the exact collar version. A product family can include options with different features.
- Resolve any mismatch before buying. Send the bar model and sleeve measurement to the seller if the specifications are unclear.
Where PG collars fit
If you need equipment for competition, consult the IWF equipment requirements as a separate check. A sleeve-size match alone does not establish competition approval for a collar.
POWER GUIDANCE barbell collars are listed for 2-inch Olympic sleeves, not 1-inch standard bars. The package includes a pair. Check that the version in your cart matches the listing you reviewed.
| What you know | Your next step |
|---|---|
| The sleeve matches the stated size | Check the remaining compatibility and installation instructions. |
| Only the grip diameter is known | Find or measure the loading sleeve instead. |
| The collar requires forcing or remains loose | Stop. Do not alter the collar to make it fit. |
Inspect the delivered pair before training
Compare what arrived with the ordered version. Check for visible damage and read the operating instructions. Do not interpret a closed lever as proof that an incompatible collar has become compatible.
If the fit is wrong, preserve the packaging and document the bar model, measured sleeve and collar version. These details help resolve the issue without guessing which component is responsible.
A good fit starts before the workout
Save the sleeve specification with your equipment records. It makes future accessory purchases easier and prevents you from repeating the same measurement mistake. Choose for the equipment you own, not for the appearance of a similar bar in a product photograph.
