Mini Hangboard Edge Depths: What the Numbers Mean for Your Training Log

Mini Hangboard Edge Depths: What the Numbers Mean for Your Training Log

POWER GUIDANCE · PERFORMANCE TRAINING GEAR

Quick answer

Edge-depth labels identify the hold you are using. They are not skill badges, and they do not prescribe a safe training load. Record the chosen edge together with your grip, assistance and planned exercise so that comparisons between sessions are meaningful.

Use the label to identify a setting

The PG Mini Hangboard listing specifies five depths: 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 mm. These are product dimensions, not a five-step programme that every climber should complete.

Do not assume that the smallest edge is the goal. The appropriate hold depends on the planned exercise and the individual using it. A label cannot account for your training history or current condition.

Record more than one number

Record Why it helps
Board model and edge label Identifies the equipment setting.
Grip and exercise Distinguishes different tasks on the same edge.
Assistance or load specified in your plan Shows the context behind the result.
Planned work and completed work Separates the prescription from what happened.
Any unusual discomfort or setup change Flags something to review rather than ignore.

Do not change everything at once

If you change the edge, exercise and setup together, a different result is difficult to interpret. Keep a clear record of what changed, and use a coach-led progression appropriate to you rather than letting the product's smallest number dictate the next session.

The BMC fingerboarding guide treats hold choice and training load as variables and warns about overtraining. That is a reason to plan the work—not an invitation to improvise harder combinations.

Why results do not transfer neatly between boards

A matching depth label does not describe the entire hold. Shape, edge profile and mounting arrangement can differ. Do not treat a result on a fixed gym board as an automatic target for a portable board.

When changing equipment, establish the correct setup and review the exercise with your instructor. Keep the old and new records clearly identified rather than combining them into one unexplained score.

Make the log support better decisions

Your notes should help answer “What did I repeat?” and “What changed?” They should not pressure you to use a smaller edge every week. Stop if the exercise produces pain, and seek appropriate advice before resuming. A useful training record supports steady decisions; it is not a challenge to beat at any cost.
