Wood vs. Resin Fingerboards: Compare the Hold, Finish and Setup
POWER GUIDANCE · PERFORMANCE TRAINING GEAR
Compare wooden and resin fingerboards by their actual hold geometry, finish, care requirements and mounting method. Material alone does not identify a beginner-friendly hold or prove better performance. A board you can use with a suitable, repeatable setup is more useful than a material label without specifications.
Why a matching depth is not the whole comparison
A 20 mm label identifies one dimension. It does not describe edge rounding, slope, width, surface finish or the orientation of the board during use. If you change boards, do not assume that the same labeled depth gives the same experience or justifies the same training load.
Ask for clear views of the actual holds. A top-down product photograph may hide the detail that changes finger contact. Match the edge you intend to use, rather than comparing one brand’s jug with another brand’s shallow edge.
What does wood tell you?
Wood identifies a material family, not one uniform surface. Beastmaker’s manufacturer FAQ discusses natural variation and the effects of conditions on the feel of its wooden boards. Those observations are useful context, not a comparative test of PG’s layered-wood product.
PG lists layered wood for its Mini Hangboard. Do not infer a guarantee against splinters, skin irritation or injury from that description. Inspect the actual item and follow its care instructions. A visible crack or damaged edge is not something to sand or repair without manufacturer direction.
What should you ask about a resin board?
Ask about the specific surface texture, edge profile, mounting arrangement and approved cleaning method. “Resin” is not a standard roughness rating, just as “wood” is not a promise of identical smoothness across every product. If possible, inspect an example of the exact model before buying.
| Compare this | Avoid assuming this |
|---|---|
| Hold shape and edge profile | Matching millimetres make all holds equivalent. |
| Actual finish | One material always feels better for every person. |
| Care instructions | One cleaner or brush is suitable for every surface. |
| Installation and intended use | Material choice makes an unsuitable support safe. |
Keep equipment changes visible in your training record
Record the board model, chosen edge, grip, assistance and other conditions when switching equipment. Establish an appropriate setup before comparing sessions. If the new surface feels different, that is information to discuss with your coach, not a reason to immediately add load.
Which should you buy?
Choose the model whose holds and installation match your plan, whose finish you can assess, and whose care requirements you can follow. If those points are unresolved, the material comparison is premature. The useful purchase is an understood piece of equipment, not a claim that wood or resin is universally superior.
Keep training advice separate from equipment approval
Metolius’s training-board guidance highlights secure equipment and injury risk. It does not approve PG installations or individual programmes.
