Do battle ropes burn belly fat? And how to choose it?
/ By Iris
Battle ropes have been misunderstood, misused, and mistaken as a fad workout tool that traumatizes the shoulders and achieves little more than looking cool. We mean all wrong: their form is bad, their goals are wrong, and they use it as an arm workout. Do you also think that? It is just used as an arm workout?
In fact, battle ropes can and should provide an effective full-body workout, and they can help powerlifters, Olympic weightlifters, strongmen, and functional fitness athletes reach their goals. They train the core strength, engage the hands, arms, shoulders, back, and even the legs for a full-body workout. Use the rope to sculpt muscles, improve endurance and burn calories. It can also increase reaction time and metabolic rate.
Try this full-body battle rope circuit finisher from trainer Paul Sklar, C.S.C.S. This series is ruthless cardiovascular work that’ll leave every body part burning, exhausting your legs, shoulders, core (and even your forearms!) as you battle through each phase. Just follow Sklar’s form to the letter, and you'll be performing movements that are extremely shoulder and back friendly. Follow his lead and your muscles will burn, but your joints won’t be screaming. If you’re over 40, this is a major key to staying healthy and fit for longer.
Throughout the circuit, focus on maintaining controlled movement through the shoulders, moving with a purpose. Avoid hazard flailing or arching your back to help swing the rope—you should focus on keeping your torso and legs as stationary as possible. Your legs will move during the circuit’s last exercise, but the shoulders are still running the show.
Do you know which Rope is Right for You?
The longer the rope the heavier it becomes and more challenging the workout will be. Shorter ropes aren’t as fluid, but they allow for smaller spaces. If you are a beginner at rope training, 30ft will be easier to hold and use. The longer one is more suitable for challenging intermediates and pros.
